Utica, NY (04/23/2009) - Dr. Judith A. Kirkpatrick, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, has named Dr. James C. Brown of New Hartford and Old Forge as the new dean of the School of Graduate and Extended Studies at Utica College. The appointment, Kirkpatrick said, is effective immediately.
UC has enjoyed steady growth in its graduate and online distance learning programs over the past few years. Prospective students and career professionals can now choose from 12 degree programs and a variety of professional development programs offered online at UC. To manage the development and execution of these programs, Brown will take on added responsibilities. Brown will also oversee the offices of corporate and professional programs, continuing education, as well as continuing to oversee the office of marketing and communications.
Brown came to UC in 2005 as assistant vice president for marketing and communications, later assuming additional responsibilities as interim assistant vice president for academic affairs in the school of graduate and extended studies. He will continue to serve in that role and will also serve as dean. He is also an adjunct instructor in the criminal justice program. “We have made great strides in building the graduate studies and distance learning programs here at UC and I’m thrilled to be part of the growth and continued expansion of the College’s graduate and extended studies offerings,” Brown said.
A 1988 UC alumnus, Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, a master’s degree in public administration from Sage Graduate School and his doctoral degree in educational leadership from the University of Phoenix.
Prior to joining UC, Brown served as director of public relations at Herkimer County Community College, and a vice president at the former Herkimer County Trust. He has also held a variety of positions in Oneida County law enforcement and government including serving as program administrator for the Oneida County STOP-DWI program and chief deputy of operations for the Oneida County Sherriff’s Department. He also served as the director of security for the Boilermaker Road Race and National Distance Running Hall of Fame. In 1996, he served as a volunteer police supervisor for the Security Team Program at the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia, and as director of operations for the 2001 Empire State Games held here in the Mohawk Valley.
