Utica, NY (04/15/2009) - Utica College will host student research day Wednesday, April 15 at 2 p.m. in the Economic Crime and Justice Studies building. The event is free and open to the public. Judith Kirkpatrick, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, will deliver welcoming remarks. Adam Pack, associate professor of biology, will introduce the various student projects.

The presentations this year focus on English and sciences. Two sessions will be held where students will present their work. In session A, William Welch will present Soldier Poets of the Elizabethan era: An examination of four prose works. Welch will present an “…examination …aimed at investigating the ways in which Elizabethan men with experience in war expressed their views of their nation in prose writing.”

Callan Bagnoli will present her work Gray: Part of a Linked Story Project which traces her writing process as she links “…short stories in a novel –length work allowing readers to see the separate works both for their own individual merit and also to understand them as an interwoven and cycle of group.”

Brian Gleitsmann will present portions of his novel in his presentation A Novel: The Death of Silence. He will share the process of getting his book conceptualized, written and rewritten. He shares the experience of what is an amorphous undertaking which is “…hard to describe any formulaic procedure that was followed as the process of writing itself relies on discovery through writing and constant revision.”

In session B, students will present their projects in the sciences, moderated by Michelle Boucher, assistant professor of chemistry. Karrel Joseph and Christopher DeSalvo will present their project Analysis of Utica Marsh Sediment Core Samples for Heavy Metals. They examined the sediments to determine whether or not there are elevated lead levels in the samples. Maggie Wright will present her research project Effects of Development and Longitudinal Exposure to Polychlorinated Biphenyl Aroclor 1254 on the Vestibular System of Black Swiss-Webster Mice, a project examining the effects of PCB exposure on the development of structures and systems in the body.

Brendon Miller will present his project Preparation of Silicate-Reinforced Plastic Monoliths. The aim of his research was “…to create sets of composite monoliths using elastomeric siloxane systems for the plastic matrix and chemically modified silicates as reinforcement.”

In addition, four students - Angela Hulbert, Thuy Nguyen, Kaleena Hoch and Cierra Fisher - will hold poster sessions directly outside the auditorium.
