Utica, NY (09/16/2004) - Utica College will host its annual Banned Book Read In on Thursday, Sept. 30 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Strebel Student Center lounge. During this time, students, faculty and staff will read passages from books that have at one point been banned, censored or challenged. The general public is invited to participate between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Banned Book Read In is held in commemoration of National Banned Books Week (Sept. 25 to Oct. 2). The national campaign celebrates the landmark U.S. Supreme Court decision in Board of Education Island Trees v. Pico, which prohibits a school board from removing books from a high school library for political reasons.

Anyone interested in participating in the Read In should contact Carol Downing, assistant professor of communication arts, at (315) 792-3155. All readers are asked to select a banned book from the list on the American Library Association’s Web site, www.ala.org. Each participant will read a three-minute passage. Readers may provide their own books, or borrow from a selection that will be available at the Read In. A representative from the Central New York chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union will also be present to provide information on the continuing nationwide efforts by special interest groups to ban and challenge books.

This year, the Read In is one of the events associated with the Mid-York Library’s Regional Read, during which residents of Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties are reading Ray Bradbury’s "Fahrenheit 451." Utica College is also one of the 13 sites that will host a live videoconference with Bradbury on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. The UC videoconference will be held in the concourse level of the Frank E. Gannett Memorial Library.
