Neighbors Help Neighbors: Utica College Takes Part in National Community Service Day

UC sponsors house for "National Rebuilding Day"
Utica, NY (04/25/2005) - More than 8,700 homes and non-profit facilities owned by elderly, disabled and low-income families will be repaired and revitalized by 275,000 volunteers nationwide on April 30.

It's National Rebuilding Day, and it will be happening right in our own backyard. Utica College, along with Hamilton College, will be helping a 104 year-old woman in Utica by painting the exterior of her home at no cost in the day-long project. She has lived in this home for more than 80 years.

"It's a wonderful opportunity when a college community can come together and make an impact on the community it is a part of," said Mark Kovacs, director of alumni and parent relations at UC. Alumni, faculty, staff and students of the college will all take part in this year's event.

Throughout the Mohawk Valley, eight homes will be revitalized in addition to the Utica College and Hamilton College house.

Nationally, projects will include building wheelchair ramps for homes that are not accessible, widening doorways for people who use wheelchairs so they can move freely through their homes, painting, roofing, plumbing and many other projects. The goal of Rebuilding Together is to provide a warm, safe and dry environment for low-income homeowners, enabling them to live independently and with dignity.

There are currently 25.6 million Americans at risk of losing their homes because of environmental, health and safety issues.
