Utica, NY (03/02/2009) - Half a century after Fidel Castro emerged from the hills with his band of revolutionary brothers to take control of Cuba, the island nation is poised to change. While ostensibly clinging to the roots of the socialist revolution, Cuba is also making adjustments to its formerly rigid economic system. Castro’s brother Raul now holds the levers of power and has signaled a willingness to lift the nation economically. The challenges ahead for Cuba will be addressed as Utica College welcomes former Carter Center Director and visiting professor of government at Hamilton College Shelley McConnell to campus where she will deliver her lecture Cuba: After Fidel, What is Next? The talk is Wednesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. in the Edith Langley Barrett Fine Art Gallery. It is free and open to the public.
McConnell, a noted expert on Cuba, spent nine years working for the Carter Center as a Senior Associate Director for the Americas Program which promotes peace and democracy in the Western Hemisphere. She helped organize President Carter’s historic trip to Cuba and accompanied him to meetings with top Cuban officials, including then-President Fidel Castro. She continued her work through follow-up visits and contacts to negotiate cooperation between the Center and the Cuban government on health promotion in Africa. McConnell has taught at Emory University and Bard College and has been a regular invited speaker at universities in the U.S and abroad.
