Utica, NY (02/24/2009) - Her journey began in 1992 when the ravages of war forced her from her home in Bosnia, where she was studying to become a lawyer. From there, a two-year stint in a refugee camp in Croatia where she ministered to her fellow refugees as a camp social worker. She arrived in Utica in 1994 and set about rebuilding her shattered life. After completing her degree studies, she went to work for the Mohawk Valley Center for Refugees. Today, Azurua Tabucic is the manager of the center’s immigration and citizenship department where she helps new refugees navigate through the byzantine bureaucracy toward citizenship.
Tabucic will share her story of survival and renewal when she delivers the keynote speech at UC’s Womyn’s Resource Center luncheon in celebration of Women’s History Month. The luncheon will be held Tuesday, March 3 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the library concourse and is part of UC’s Womyn’s Herstory Month, celebrated annually during the congressionally-sanctioned Women’s History Month.
All are welcome to attend but reservations must be made. Contact the Womyn’s Resource Center at (315) 792- 3327 to make reservations. The cost for the luncheon is $15. The luncheon kicks off a month of events at UC in celebration of Womyn’s Herstory Month.
