Utica, NY (02/12/2009) - Utica College will present the acclaimed play, The Vagina Monologues, Saturday, Feb. 14 at 5 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. in Strebel Auditorium. Tickets for these benefit performances are $5 ($3 for UC students.) All proceeds will be donated to Spotlight, a charity helping victims of sexual violence in the war-ravaged Democratic Republic of Congo, and locally to the YWCA’s Hall House.

The play has been hailed by critics as “funny,” “poignant” and “courageous.” The work is the result of the author’s 200-plus interviews with women about their sexuality and their experiences with violence. The material is, by turn, irreverent, disturbing, stark, serious and ultimately illuminating.

Alane Varga, associate dean of students, notes that the V-Day activities were all initiated and organized by students. “The students are excited to have this opportunity to participate in an international effort to combat violence against women and girls,” she said. “It’s also an opportunity to present a moving and powerful set of monologues to the UC community.”

The presentation is part of UC’s V-Day activities intended to raise awareness about the scourge of violence against women and girls around the world. The V-Day movement, founded by Monologues author Eve Ensler, is part of a global effort to end violence against women and girls. To date, the organization has raised more than $45 million and funded more than 5000 community anti-violence programs across the world.
