Utica, NY (02/09/2009) - Utica College students will share their thoughts about a study-abroad trip to Europe at a Geotalk lecture on Friday, Feb. 13 at 2:30 p.m. in the Willard Conference Room in DePerno Hall. They will discuss their experiences of visits to various Holocaust-related sites across Europe.Last summer, a group of UC students traveled to Germany, Poland and Hungary to learn about the tragedies that took place during World War II when more than 6 million Jews and other minority groups were systematically murdered. The students listened to lectures, visited memorials and museums and walked the hallowed grounds of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp located in Poland. Now after returning the 3,800 miles home, the students will share their knowledge with the general public to educate them on the devastations in Europe, based on their first-hand experience.
In addition to student testimonials, John C. Swanson, associate professor of history, will also make a presentation regarding the subject.
“Often we see the Holocaust as a struggle between good and evil and sometimes we just put the evil over there and we don’t really have to understand it,” Swanson said. “But if you see the perpetrators as human beings it makes it more difficult because those were people just like you and me, and they committed this evil.”
The event is free, open to the public and refreshments will be provided. For more information about Geotalks at Utica College, contact Amy Lindsey, assistant professor of psychology, at (315) 792-3806 or alindsey@utica.edu.
