Utica, NY (12/05/2008) - Utica College’s Black Student Union (BSU) will host its 19th annual Kwanzaa celebration Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Library Concourse. Following a reception, dinner will be served at 7 p.m. and a program of celebration featuring speakers, singers and a performance by the Nuyorican Poetry Slam Team round out the activities for the evening. The event is free to UC students. The cost for all others is $10.Kwanzaa was established to celebrate family, community and culture. The holiday was first celebrated in 1966 but traces its roots to ancient African cultures and the celebration of the first harvest. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits.” There are seven core communitarian principles embodied in the spirit of Kwanzaa: unity, self determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
