Utica, NY (11/20/2008) - Theta Phi Alpha and Utica College hockey have united to "Pink the Rink" during the men’s and women’s ice hockey games on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Pink the Rink is a campaign designed to help the public become more informed about breast cancer, while raising money for a cure. The Pioneer hockey players will wear pink collector’s edition jerseys during the doubleheader on Dec. 6. The apparel will then be auctioned off to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Bidding for the jerseys will begin at $100. However, an initial offer of $300 will secure the bidder a jersey. The auction began on Nov. 13 and will end at 5 p.m. on Dec. 5. Visit www.ucpioneers.com to place a bid.

Additionally, the Theta Phi Alpha sorority sisters are encouraging fans to don pink attire to support the cause when attending the games. For spectators who do not have any pink clothing in their closets, Theta Phi Alpha will have pink shirts available for sale before each game.

“Nearly 40,500 women die from breast cancer each year,” said Chelsea Cota, vice president of Theta Phi Alpha. “We are trying to do our part to help people understand the illness and assist those who are suffering.”

The Utica College women’s team will face off against Cortland State in a conference matchup at 3 p.m., while the men’s team takes the ice against ECAC rival Elmira College at 7 p.m.

“We have a chance to raise a substantial amount of money for the American Cancer Society and the fight against breast cancer,” said Dave Clausen, head coach of the women’s team. “We want to pack the rink for the double-header on Dec. 6 and come together as a community to help raise awareness.”

"Pink the Rink" apparel -- including t-shirts and sweatshirts -- is available at the UC Bookstore, Manager Lauren Partyka said.

For more information about Pink the Rink at Utica College, contact Cota at cmcota@utica.edu . Any questions regarding bidding on collector’s edition jerseys can be directed to Clausen at dclausen@utica.edu.
