Utica, NY (10/28/2008) - Weaving has been an important cultural aspect of the Maya people for centuries. These ancient art forms have been able to survive various attacks on Maya culture through the years; whether from the Spanish conquistadors or from Westernization that is permeating many indigenous cultures. It is evident that the weaving aspect of the Maya culture has not only remained constant, but has flourished in recent years. It is in this respect that the UC community will be able to have a first-hand look at the process and the final creations.

Alido Santos Perez, an advocate for the Maya people, will be visiting the Utica College campus to speak and to show her original tapestry works to students, faculty, and staff.
Traveling from San Antonio Aguas Calientes, in Guatemala, Perez is bringing the culture of her clan, the Kakchikel Maya, to UC and the community. She has met with political and social leaders around the world, attempting to highlight the issues of free trade and marketability of Guatemalan-made pieces.

Perez’s accomplishments include the creation of Artisanos Unidos, a program that is helping to promote indigenous crafts and create a market for them in the global economy. Additionally, she founded the Museo Casa del Tajido Antiquo, in Antigua, Guatemala. The museum’s main focus is on the education of weaving practices, techniques, history, and various styles employed by Maya artisans.

While on campus, Perez will teach attendees the art of weaving while also offering pieces up for sale. She will hold a discussion later, on women weavers and their standing in the global marketplace.

The event will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 29, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. in Strebel Student Center. Perez will hold her artist talk at 1:30 p.m. Perez’s talk is free and open to the public.
