Utica, NY (10/21/2008) - Mona S. Rice, director of human resources at Utica College, was honored today with the Ursula Flagg Award for Human Resource Excellence for 2008. The award was presented at a breakfast sponsored by the Mohawk Valley Society for Human Resource Management (MVSHRM) and the Mohawk Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Rice won the prestigious honor because of her exemplary efforts as a human resource professional and a community leader. While working and taking classes, she balanced her personal and professional life, and in 1999 she earned a bachelor’s degree from Utica College, followed by a master’s degree in management and a minor in human resources from SUNYIT. After serving at AmeriCU Credit Union for 16 years, and working closely with the Rome City School District, she joined the UC staff in 2005. Since then, she has worked to ensure that all of the college’s employees are trained and given the benefits and assistance they need. Although she is a strong worker and loves what she does, she still finds time to spend with her family in Rome.

Rice’s influences in the community are as admirable as her actions in the office. She seeks to combine the areas of education, business, and human resources so that everyone in the community can succeed in any endeavor they wish to pursue. It was this attitude put into action that won Rice the 2006 “Follow the Leader” award.

The award, bestowed in the memory of the late Ursula Flagg, is in its seventh year. Flagg, a former human resources officer, served 35 years at the Savings Bank of Utica, and was a strong member of its team. Her hard work, not only at the bank, but also in the surrounding communities, formed the basis for what this award embodies. MVSHRM presents the honor to a human resource professional based on his or her accomplishments in this field.
