Utica, NY (09/18/2008) - By the time you finish reading this, someone will have been sexually assaulted. According to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), there were 272,350 victims of sexual assault in 2006. On Thursday, Sept. 25, Utica College students will participate in various activities in hope of raising awareness about sexual assault and sex abuse.
RAINN Day is RAINN’s national campaign to eliminate sexual assault on college campuses. Theta Phi Alpha and the Womyn’s Resource Center are teaming up with Campus Safety, WPNR 90.7 FM, the Health Center, and Academic Support Services to organize RAINN Day at Utica College.
From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be informational tables set up outside of the Strebel Student Center, where a number of campus and community organizations will provide information pertaining to issues of sexual violence. From 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., there will be a self-defense class in the Strebel Student Center. Grand Master Seng from Master Seng’s Martial Arts in New Hartford will offer his services to help students learn how to protect themselves in the case of an attack. The class is free of charge. From 6 to 8 p.m. there will be a panel of speakers discussing the Anatomy of a Rape Case. Here students will have the chance to ask questions regarding sexual assault and rape cases; panelists represent a range of perspectives that reflect the professions with which a victim may interact when reporting an incident of sexual violence. Following will be a showing of the movie The Accused, starring Jodie Foster, in the Strebel Auditorium. This event is also free of charge.
“We think these events are very important to offer at UC in conjunction with RAINN day,” said Jenna Fratarcangelo, member of Theta Phi Alpha and coordinator of the RAINN Day events. “We want everyone to be more aware about these horrific crimes in an effort to reduce the number of victims. In 2007, nearly 750 schools participated in RAINN Day, so now we’re doing our part to help the cause.”
