Mohawk Valley Writing Project Unveils Fall Programming
Workshops Explore Various Approaches to Better Writing

Utica, NY (09/15/2008) - The Mohawk Valley Writing Project has unveiled a Fall 2008 program that features five workshops for local teachers and writers. Each session will explore a particular aspect of the writing process.• Workshop A: Writing Your Life. This workshop, three two-hour sessions, explores effective strategies for documenting one’s life. Tuesday evenings: Sept. 23, Oct. 7, and Oct. 14, 6 to 8 p.m. at Utica College. Cost is $100 for all three sessions or $40 per session.
• Workshop B: Utica Writing Marathon. This one-day, six-hour session will split writers into groups and send them out to Utica-area landmarks where they will write about such places as the Utica Zoo, Proctor Park, Varick Street, and other local historical and cultural cornerstones. This workshop will take place Saturday, Oct. 11, at Utica College’s Boehlert Hall. This workshop is free and open to all writers; the registration deadline is Oct. 6.
• Workshop C: Because Writing Matters: A Workshop for Teachers. This workshop is designed for all teachers, K-12, who are committed to quality writing instruction across the curriculum. Participants will be introduced to the National Writing Project’s “teachers teaching teachers” model. These weekly Wednesday sessions will be held from October 15 through November 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Utica College. The cost is $50 for the six sessions. Registration deadline is Oct. 6.
• Workshop D: Talk to Me I: Surviving the First Year. This workshop encourages first-year teachers to use writing and sharing with peers to help ease the stresses and challenges of teachers’ first year in the classroom. Sessions begin at 3:15 p.m. on Sept. 17 and continue every third Wednesday of succeeding months until the final session on June 17 at The Teacher Center on the MVCC campus. The cost is $25 for the ten sessions. Registration deadline is Sept. 8.
• Workshop E: Talk to Me II: Preventing Teacher Burnout. This workshop promotes the use of writing and peer support by teachers at all stages of their careers to sustain themselves professionally and personally. The sessions are from 4 to 6 p.m. beginning Sept. 24 and are held on the fourth Wednesday of each succeeding month until April 29 at the Teacher Center on the MVCC campus. The cost is $50 for seven sessions.
