Utica, NY (07/03/2008) - Utica College will host the Mohawk Valley Writing Project (MVWP) Summer Institute’s first annual Utica Writing Marathon Wednesday, July 9.The marathon will begin at 9 a.m. in Room B1, Hubbard Hall. During the morning session, participants will join a Writing Group and visit sites in Utica, observe and write, followed by lunch at the college at noon. At 1 p.m., James Pula, editor of Ethnic Utica, will read and discuss “writing the city.” Participants will then have an opportunity to share their work from the “Writer’s Chair.”
“I’m very excited about the Utica Writing Marathon because it provides MVWP with an opportunity to host community members as well at teachers,” says Mary Ann Janda, MVWP director and professor of English at UC. “I think it will be a great chance to get to know Utica better and to write and talk about writing. We’ve invited the Utica Writers Club to join us, and we are looking forward to James Pula’s reading from Ethnic Utica.”
Interested participants can contact Kristin Phelps at 792-3057 or email kphelps@utica.edu. There is no charge to attend this program.
The Mohawk Valley Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, is a federally-funded professional development program for teachers. Workshops are open to K-12 teachers from all subject areas. The Writing Project seeks to inspire practicing teachers and develop a local network in which their insights, practices and wisdom can be shared through inservice projects. Writing Project teacher consultants become leaders in their regions, helping to build vital and productive literacy communities in their schools.
