Summer Writing Workshops Slated for Teachers
Kindergarten through College Teachers of All Subjects Welcome

Utica, NY (06/19/2008) -Utica College will host the Mohawk Valley Writing Project (MVWP) Summer Workshops for Teachers of all subjects, kindergarten through college, beginning this month.
There will be five different sessions:
- Workshop A: June 23-June 27, 3 to 6 p.m.: The Teacher Story: Reading, Making, Using
- Workshop E: July 14-16, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Talk to Me I - How to survive the first years of teaching
- Workshop B: August 4-6, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Poetry: Reading it, Writing it, Teaching it, Enjoying it
- Workshop C: August 4-8, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Because Writing Matters Part I; An inquiry-based workshop on developing writing instruction across the content areas
- Workshop D: August 11-15, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.: Because Writing Matters Part II; An inquiry-based workshop focusing on using classroom based teacher research to validate an increase in student achievement
There is a $50 fee per week; books and supplies will be provided. All workshops were developed and will be offered by MVWP teacher consultants.
“The Writing Project seeks to bring teachers from all grade levels and from all subjects together so that they can discuss, write, and develop their thinking about the teaching of writing,” said Mary Ann Janda, MVWP director, professor of English and director of the Writing Center at Utica College. “The Writing Project honors teachers and their practice and gives them time and opportunity to discover and share their expertise. Our Summer Workshops for teachers are a part of that effort.”

The Mohawk Valley Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, is a federally-funded professional development program for teachers. Workshops are open to K-12 teachers from all subject areas. The Writing Project seeks to inspire practicing teachers and develop a local network in which their insights, practices and wisdom can be shared through inservice projects. Writing Project teacher consultants become leaders in their regions, helping to build vital and productive literacy communities in their schools.
