Utica, NY (04/11/2008) - The 2002 film that won the top documentary award at the Sundance Film Festival, "The Eye of the Day," will be shown at Utica College Monday (April 14) at 6:45 p.m. in Macfarlane Auditorium, Deperno Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
This riveting documentary by Leonard Retel Helmrich takes place in 1998. Political and economic cries forced President Suharto of Indonesia, the world’s fourth largest nation and the largest Islamic nation, to resign after 32 years in power, marking the beginning of the tumultuous period known in Indonesia as the Reformasi. The Eye of the Day documents the resulting conflicts as they play out in the lives of 60-year-old Rumijah, her two sons Bakti and Dwi, and her friend Ibu Sum. Helmrich creates a cinematographic feast for the eyes while capturing the trials and tribulations of everyday life in Indonesia today.
The film is the second event of the new series Imaging Reality: Journalism, Cinema, and Photography, focusing on interconnections between journalism and the photographic arts. Curated by Professor Kim Landon and Professor Emeritus Scott MacDonald, the series brings accomplished moving-image artists and photographers to campus to present films and videos that demonstrate the many ways in which the photographic arts can reveal and offer new perspectives on significant historical and political developments.
