Utica, NY (04/11/2008) - Utica College’s Gerontology Department will host a seminar on elder abuse awareness Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. in the Library Concourse. The seminar will feature speakers from UC’s Gerontology Department, area agencies and non-profits promoting awareness, recognition and prevention of elder abuse and mistreatment, which often involves neglect.

Art Mason, director of LIFESPAN in Rochester, a non-profit agency dedicated to providing information, guidance and services to the elderly, will define elder abuse. Kristin Palmer, program coordinator for the Oneida County Elder Abuse Coalition, will discuss the impact of elder abuse in Oneida County. The coalition focuses on intervention and prosecution.

Norman Peek from Oneida County Adult Protective Services will address how agencies coordinate with each other to match victims with services. He notes that advocacy for the elderly is often more difficult to fit neatly into one agency and that the network of groups needs to keep open and ongoing communications a priority.

The seminar is the brainchild of the UC Student Gerontology Society and the State Society on Aging of New York. “The students felt that the community should have a greater awareness of this horrific problem in order to help combat it,” said Darlene Heian, assistant professor and director of gerontology.

UC recently received approval from the New York State Education Department for its bachelor’s degree in gerontology, one of only 45 colleges in the country to offer such a degree in this rapidly growing field.

The seminar is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Heian at 792-3309 or dheian@utica.edu.
