Utica, NY (04/07/2008) - World-renowned photographer Kael Alford, whose work has appeared in Time, Newsweek, US News and World Report, The New York Times and Vanity Fair, will speak at Utica College on Thursday, April 10 at 6:45 p.m. in MacFarlane Auditorium. The presentation is free and open to the public.Alford’s presentation is the first part of Utica College’s new series titled Imaging Reality: Journalism, Cinema, and Photography, which focuses on the interconnections between journalism and the photographic arts. Conceived and coordinated by professor Kim Landon and professor emeritus Scott MacDonald, the series will demonstrate the many ways in which the photographic arts can contextualize perspectives on significant historical and political developments. This event will feature Alford sharing her experiences of plying her craft in the maelstrom of war and its uncertain aftermath.
Alford’s photography focuses on cultures, politics and societies in transition. She has taught photojournalism at the American University of Bulgaria, and currently teaches photography at Savannah College of Art and Design’s Atlanta campus. She was based in the Balkans from 1996-2003 and photographed stories across the region during Yugoslavia’s violent break up, the war in Kosovo and the conflict in Macedonia. In 2003 and 2004, she worked extensively in Iraq up to, during and after the U.S.-led invasion. She documented the tumultuous disintegration of Iraq’s society and the rise of the Iraqi resistance that followed the U.S. occupation. Her work is included in a national, touring exhibition based on the book Unembedded: Four Independent Photojournalist in Iraq, a work she co-authored with three other wartime photographers. One reviewer noted of the book, “In their unflinching look at war-ravaged Iraq, four freelance photojournalists show that life there is brutal yet poignant; that compassion co-exists with anger, hatred, and fear.”
Since returning to live in the United States in 2005, Alford has been covering subjects in the American South. She is currently working on a long-term project about coastal erosion and its impact on the landscape and cultures of the Gulf Coast.
