Utica, NY (03/10/2008) - Utica College students will board the bus at 7:30 tomorrow (March 11) morning, but not for an extracurricular or sports event. Instead, the students will try their hand at lobbying in Albany. At stake: increases in the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) awards, and restoring cuts to the Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) funding for college.

Students will meet with legislators and their aides to present their cases for increasing the funding. Also at risk are Liberty Partnership Programs (LPP), such as the very successful Young Scholars LPP between the Utica City School District and Utica College.

With more than 335,000 students across the state relying on the program to help cover their college costs, TAP remains a critical component in keeping higher education affordable, college officials said. Undergraduate students have not seen a TAP increase in eight years, while graduate students have been waiting more than 20 years. The cuts in HEOP and LPP would have significant impact on socio-economically challenged students and their families.

The students, faculty and staff are expected to return at about 5:30 p.m.
