Utica, NY (02/14/2008) - A group of Utica College students have become tutors – and oftentimes mentors – to some middle and high school students from the Utica City School district.

Abby Getman, a UC senior majoring in government/politics and history, learned about the Study Buddy Club offered by Hamilton College students, and organized a similar group at UC. Now UC students meet with their younger counterparts every other Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at Martin Luther King School in Utica; alternate weeks take place at Hamilton.

Study Buddies were the brainchild of Cassandra Harris-Lockwood, president and CEO of For The Good, a local not-for-profit agency, working to improve the community.

While the ages and subject matters vary, most of the students need help in reading, math and history, Getman said. A native of Somersville, Conn., Getman describes herself as someone who has a calling at the grassroots level, definitely a hands-on type person … which is just the catalyst this group needed. Through UC, she has done an internship in India, as well as work with Project SHINE and the Mohawk Valley Refugee Center.

Getman approached members of a student group on campus, Brothers On a New Direction (BOND), as well as students planning to be teachers – especially in math.

The Utica College Study Buddy group was also coordinated by Attia Nasar, a junior studying public relations and human rights, and Gabriel Harris-Lockwood, a junior majoring in psychology. While the tutoring requires time and patience, the rewards are great, as well, organizers said.

“It’s really exciting working with kids and hearing the success stories,” said Getman. Getman recalled a time when her buddy came in and told her that he had made the honor roll. “It’s exciting to know we’re actually helping them,” she continued.

While Getman is unsure of her plans after graduation in May, others in the group plan to carry on the work.

The Study Buddy group is raising funds for a field trip to New York City, where they plan to visit the Museum of Natural History and the New York Historical Society.
