Utica, NY (02/13/2008) - The Utica College chapter of the Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity, in conjunction with Student Senate and the Student Anti-Genocide Coalition (S.T.A.N.D.), is presenting the Genocide in Darfur Awareness Banquet on Saturday, February 23.Hundreds of thousands of Darfurians have been killed in an act of genocide due to this religious war in northern Africa. According to SaveDarfur.org, rebel movements have destroyed villages, damaged food and water supplies, and tortured innocent Darfurians in their conquest for supremacy within this territory in Sudan.
This semi-formal event will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the Library Concourse of Utica College. A former refugee guest speaker will discuss this tragedy after a dinner catered by Las Delicias in Syracuse. Music and an African art exhibit hope to inform patrons and students of the Sudanese culture. Finally, a short film will help to visualize the graphic tragedies happening overseas.
All proceeds from the benefit will be donated to help improve the situation in Darfur. Cost of the event is free for UC students, $7 for non-UC students, and $10 for the public. For more information contact Utica College Student Advocate Johnny Jeter at jjeter69@utica.edu or (240) 413-8350.
