Utica, NY (10/12/2007) -    Utica College will dedicate a residence hall and conference center in honor of longtime friend and donor Sherwood L. Boehlert Friday this afternoon at 5:15 p.m.
UC President Todd S. Hutton said the retired Congressman and graduate of the class of 1961 has long been a driving force at UC. He procured more than $3 million in funding for the science and technology complex, and obtained additional funding for the development of the college’s cybersecurity and information assurance program. He secured $60,000 to enhance the UC Regional Science Fair, and has helped bring several prominent NASA astronauts and scientists to the College.
In recognition of his service and support, UC has previously honored Boehlert with the Outstanding Alumnus award in 1984, the Alumni of Achievement award in 1981 and 1987, and the honorary degree, doctor of laws, in 2004.
He was elected to the United State House of Representatives in 1982, and served until his retirement this past January. During his 24 years in Congress, he served on a number of important committees, including the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee. As chairperson of the House Science Committee, he assumed a leadership role in the investigation of the space shuttle Columbia tragedy and introduced the American Competitiveness Initiative, a funding plan introduced by President Bush in his 2006 State of the Union Address that significantly increases funding for scientific research and science education.
In 2002, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities selected him for induction into the Independent Sector Alumni Hall of Distinction. In recognition of his outstanding leadership on behalf of higher education, the American Association of University Professors presented him with its 2003 Henry T. Yost Congressional Recognition Award. In 2006, in recognition of his leadership in advancing scientific and technological research, New York University bestowed upon him its Presidential Medal, an award whose past recipients include Nelson Mandela. That same year, he was presented with League of Conservation Voters’ Legacy of Leadership Award and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s Howard K. Schachman Award for Public Service.
The event will be held at the College’s dedication site, formerly New Hall.
