Utica, NY (08/17/2007) - Utica College will present “Common Threads of Tradition in the PRESENT” in the Edith Langley Barrett Fine Art Gallery beginning Sept. 9.

Najada Hamza and Victoria Zacek, women artists from different parts of the world, are connected through their works in the fiber arts and this exhibition. Both artists have created pieces that are inspired by and incorporate the culture of traditional Albania. The works of the two artists comprise an exhibit highlighting the richly artistic and historical impact that weaving and fibers have had on the Albanian culture and the role of women throughout history.

Hamza, an Albanian native, is the National Fiber Artist of Albania as well as the Studio Faculty Chair for the Albania Academy of Art.

Zacek, a central New York native, earned an MFA in Fiber Art from Syracuse University, where she now serves as an adjunct professor in the fibers department.

Fiber art is one of the mediums of fine art that incorporates both natural and synthetic fibers such from materials beginning with animals, plants and metal. It focuses on the craftsmanship and materials used as part of the artwork’s significance and meaning. The works of both artists are based in weaving while challenging convention into new forms and formats. Weaving integrates painting, photography and collage.

The exhibit, which also incorporates a collection of traditional antiquities Albanian Balkan women’s garments, is sponsored by the U.S. Embassy – Albania, The Foundation for Albanian Visual Arts Across Borders, Albania Institute of Folk Culture, The Mele Foundation, The Albania Collection, Edith Langley Barrett Fine Art Gallery and Utica College.

An opening reception will be held Sunday, Sept. 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Edith Langley Barrett Art Gallery with the gallery director’s talk at 4:30. The exhibit will run from Sept. 9 to Nov. 16 and will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. For details, visit the Gallery Web site at www.utica.edu/gallery
