UC Student Group Takes A STAND

Student Activists Mark Fourth Anniversary of Darfur Crisis

Written By Janette Peri, Student

The local chapter of STAND, a student anti-genocide coalition, will show a documentary in Macfarlane Auditorium this Friday.
Utica, NY (04/25/2007) -

Student activists at Utica College will join with those from more than 100 other cities around the world in a Global Day for Darfur, calling for immediate action from President Bush, Congress and the international community to help end the violence in the western region of Sudan, where more than 400,00 people are dead and more than 2.5 million have been displaced.

The local STAND Chapter (A Student Anti-Genocide Coalition) at Utica College is presenting genocide awareness activities in conjunction with Save Darfur’s Global Day For Darfur campaign.
To educate the students about genocide, STAND will co-sponsor the showing of a documentary, Darfur Diaries, with UC Athletics, the Office of Residence Life, and Theta Phi Alpha Sorority, Inc. The film will be shown Friday, April 27 at 7 p.m. in Macfarlane Auditorium in Deperno Hall at Utica College; it is free and open to the public.

As the conflict enters its fifth year, STAND members will call upon the international community to put the pressure on Sudan once again to allow the deployment of an international peacekeeping force for the protection of civilians.

“Time is running out for the people of Darfur,” said Janette Peri, president of STAND. “Since 2003 the genocide in Darfur has been ignored. From everything we hear – the situation is only worsening. The people of Darfur need action now.”

The Sudanese government has consistently blocked efforts to deploy a hybrid United Nations –African Union peacekeeping force that it agreed to in December when it was under significant international pressure, Peri said. Rally participants will call on world leaders, including the Bush administration, to implement and enforce tough sanctions on Sudan until it complies with an international peacekeeping mission.

“We encourage members of the community to join us in increasing awareness about the situation in Darfur,” said Peri. “Everyone in the community is encouraged to participate.”

Previous Global Day for Darfur events attracted tens of thousands of supporters from around the world. In September 2006, 57 events took place in 41 countries on six continents focused on the need to get U.N. peacekeeping troops into Darfur. The second Global Day in December drew attention to the use of sexual violence against the women of Darfur.
