Utica, NY (04/04/2007) - Utica College will host a program focusing on the challenges associated with caring for the elderly residing in rural communities, as well as strategies for tackling those issues.

The program, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Willard Conference Room, DePerno Hall, on Tuesday, April 10 at 7 p.m. The event, titled “Challenges and Resources for Rural Caregivers,” is cosponsored by Utica College, SUNY IT, and the N.Y. State Society on Aging education committee.

It is predicted that by the year 2020, one-fourth of the nation’s elderly population will reside in rural areas, and will comprise 15% of the rural population.

The program will address the specific obstacles faced by those caring for elderly people in rural areas, such as geographic isolation and needs unique to agricultural workers, as well as possible strategies to face these needs

Speaking at the event will be SUNY IT nursing and health systems faculty members Mary Lou Wranesh and Christeen Liang, as well as Utica College gerontology students. Refreshments will be served. For more information about this event, contact Darlene Heian, assistant professor of gerontology at Utica College, at 292-6816 or via e-mail at dheian@utica.edu.
