Utica, NY (02/28/2007) - Teachers can spend a day focusing on writing, both their own and that of their students. On March 31 (Saturday), the Mohawk Valley Writing Project at Utica College and the New York State English Council will cosponsor “Teacher as Writer: A Day of Writing, Reflection, Exploration and Practice.” The event is open to teachers of grades K-12 in all content areas and programs.
The morning workshops will encourage participants to write for themselves and to help their students become more engaged in the writing process. In the afternoon, Herm Card, teacher, poet and consultant, will speak on the teacher as writer and writing strategies for teachers and students. There will also be a luncheon to celebrate UC alumni from the education program.
Mary Ann Janda, UC professor of English and director of the writing center, said, “Teachers will be able to take away ideas that will prove useful in their own classrooms. They'll also take away a writer's notebook and an opportunity to share their best practices with other teachers, which is the heart of the writing project.”
She added, “They'll not only learn about MVWP, but also about the New York State English Council, which is a rich resource for all teachers in all subject areas interested in writing.”
A regional affiliate of the National Writing Project, MVWP is a federally-funded professional development program for educators teaching grades K-12.
The event will be held from 9 to 3 in the New Hall Conference Center at Utica College. The cost is $35, and the deadline to register is Friday, March 23.
For more information or to obtain a registration form, contact Kristin Phelps in the UC Division of Arts and Sciences at (315) 792-3057.
