Utica, NY (02/08/2007) - Despite the growing usage of e-mail and text messaging, handwriting remains a critical skill. Utica College will offer a Kids Handwriting Workshop for children in kindergarten through grade 6 beginning Feb. 27.

The workshop will utilize the “Handwriting Without Tears” methodology and is designed to help children improve their handwriting. Students will participate in fun activities and specific handwriting training designed to improve the quality and speed of either cursive or manuscript handwriting. Through specific, supervised, age-appropriate activities, the workshop will focus on letter formation, neatness, sentence spacing, and cursive letter connections.

The workshop will be taught by Cathleen Chauncey-Gardner. A certified occupational therapy assistant (COTA), Chauncey-Gardner has worked in school districts in both Massachusetts and New York state. She has more than five years experience in pediatric, school-based intervention with a major focus on elementary handwriting skills. In addition, she has completed special training in the “Handwriting Without Tears” program.

Joni Pulliam, director of UC’s corporate and professional programs, said, "Handwriting doesn't come easy for all children. The Kids Handwriting Workshop benefits children by not only helping them improve their handwriting, but also by helping them to feel more comfortable when writing. Better handwriting enables children to perform better in school and take greater pride in their work.”

The workshop will consist of 12 sessions, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. beginning Tuesday, Feb. 27 and concluding Thursday, April 5. The cost is $115 per child, which includes instruction and all materials. For more information, or to pick up a registration form, contact Pulliam at the Graduate and Extended Services Office at (315) 792-3344.
