Mele Foundation Awards Two Grants to UC
Health Sciences Project, Young Scholars to Benefit

The Mele Foundation has awarded two grants to Utica College for the construction of the new Health Sciences building, and to expand the Young Scholars mentorship program.

Utica, NY (01/17/2007) - The Mele Foundation, Inc. has awarded a $25,000 grant to Utica College for the construction of its new Health Sciences building, the F. Eugene Romano Hall, and a $20,000 grant to the Young Scholars Liberty Partnerships Program for expansion of the mentorship program.Currently under construction, Romano Hall will provide approximately 23,000 square feet of classroom, laboratory and clinical space, as well as modern technology for students studying physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, therapeutic recreation, health studies and psychology-child life. This first phase of the college’s science and technology project is expected to be completed this summer.
The second grant is to expand the mentorship program of the Young Scholars LPP, a collaborative project of Utica College and the Utica City School District. The Young Scholars LPP seeks volunteers from the community to mentor at-risk students in the Utica public junior and senior high schools. The program is designed to motivate young students to stay in school, earn a New York State Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation, and pursue post-secondary education. The Young Scholars LPP enjoys a 96 percent graduation rate of its scholars over the last seven years. For more information, visit www.utica.edu/youngscholars or call (315) 792-3237.
The Mele Foundation, Inc. gives grants to charitable, educational or medical organizations in Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties in New York state.
