Utica, NY (11/30/2006) - The Black Student Union (BSU) at Utica College will host two events in celebration of Kwanzaa.

On Friday (Dec. 1), there will be a Celestial Celebration in the Strebel Student Student Center at 6 p.m. focusing on African-American culture featuring acts from both UC students and members of the community. Performances will range from poetry to song and dance. In addition, black-owned businesses from the Mohawk Valley have been invited to set up displays in the Strebel Student Center. Items for purchases include food, clothing and jewelry.

On Saturday (Dec. 2), the 17th Annual Kwanzaa Dinner will be held at 7 p.m. in the Library Concourse. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and seating is determined on a first come first serve basis. Guest speaker Adam Banks, assistant professor of writing at Syracuse University, will give a speech titled “From Cliché to Commitment.” Other topics of discussion include an explanation of Kwanzaa and its various customs. This event is free for UC students and $10 for members of the local community.

Kwanzaa is an annual celebration of family, community and culture founded by Maulana Karenga. This celebration introduces and reinforces the Nguzo Saba, which are seven principles that encourage and strengthen family, community and culture among the global African population.
