Utica, NY (08/16/2006) - The Utica College community was saddened to learn of the passing of former President Thomas Sheldon on Monday. He was 86.

Dr. Sheldon was installed as the fourth president and seventh chief executive officer of Utica College in November 1977, and served the institution until 1982. During his tenure, he presided over a significant expansion of UCs academic programs and initiated what was the largest capital projects campaign in the College's history up to that time.

Under Dr. Sheldon's leadership, Utica College also sought and obtained independent accreditation from Middle States in 1978. Until that time, UC's programs were recognized as branch campus offerings under Syracuse University's accreditation. Dr. Sheldon's foresight created the foundation for the College to move in new directions, leading eventually to UC becoming an independent, freestanding institution in 1995.

Dr. Sheldon earned his bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees from Syracuse University, and was the first recipient of the SU School of Educations Outstanding Graduate Award. Prior to his time at UC, he served as New York state deputy commissioner of education.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Russell H. Schepp and Son Funeral Home in Minoa, NY. Services will be held on Saturday, August 19 at St. Mary's Church in Minoa. Dr. Sheldon will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery.
