Utica, NY (08/10/2006) - The Slocum-Dickson Foundation has awarded Utica College a $6,000 grant to support a specialized geriatric education program for local health care professionals.

The 2006 Geriatric Scholar Certificate Program, presented in collaboration with Columbia University and the Consortium of New York Geriatric Education Centers (CNYGEC), is a 40-hour professional training designed to improve the quality of life for seniors by educating health care professionals who care for them. Topics to be discussed include aging myths and elder abuse, the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and unique approaches to caring for the elderly.

The Geriatric Scholar program will be held this fall on Sept. 21, 28, Oct. 5, 12, and 19. Physicians, physical therapists, nurses, chaplains, dietitians, nursing home administrators and social workers may receive continuing education credits upon completion of the program, as well as a certificate from New York University.

Dr. K. Della Ferguson, dean of the Division of Health and Human Studies at Utica College, said that the Slocum-Dickson Foundation grant allows for the ongoing fruitful collaboration with Columbia and the CNYGEC. “This partnership has provided training and consultation for central New York health professionals working with our elder residents,” Ferguson said.

The Slocum-Dickson Foundation was established to improve and advance the science of medicine and surgery through philanthropic and charitable activities. The foundation has been a financial sponsor of the Geriatric Scholar Certificate Program in the Mohawk Valley since 2001.
