Utica, NY (08/07/2006) - Teachers throughout the Mohawk Valley spent the past five weeks in their own version of summer school. The Mohawk Valley Writing Project, a professional development program that helps teachers in grades K-12 develop their writing skills, teaching abilities, and understanding of writing and learning through research, was held this summer at Utica College. During the school year, the teachers will share their knowledge within their own schools through presentations.
MVWP will host an open house on Wednesday, Aug. 9, at UC from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., with a luncheon at 12:30 p.m., marking the end of the summer sessions.
MVWP is co-directed by Mary Ann Janda, professor of English at Utica College, and Danielle Brain, chair of the English program at Proctor High School. “At the heart of the program is the idea that the best resource for teachers is other teachers,” Janda said.
The project was funded through a $30,000 grant from the National Writing Project (NWP) Corporation; additional activities will continue throughout the school year.
NWP is the premier initiative to improve writing in America, Janda said. Through its professional development model, NWP builds the leadership, programs, and research needed for teachers to help their students become successful writers and learners.
