Utica, NY (06/12/2006) - A longtime supporter of Utica College was honored at the groundbreaking ceremonies for F. Eugene Romano Hall recently.
An honorary doctor of humane letters degree was conferred upon Albert Shaheen, M.D., a member of one of Utica College’s first classes, and a 1949 graduate of the college. He was also honored at the college’s commencement ceremonies.
Shaheen and his wife established the Dr. Albert H. ’49 and Gloria A. ’82 Shaheen Scholarship Fund. They made generous donations to the unrestricted annual fund, the Crisafulli Fund for the Advancement of Teaching, and the UC Biology Challenge. They also provided a significant contribution toward the construction of Charles A. Gaetano Stadium at the college.
A former member of the Utica College Foundation Board, Shaheen has been honored with an Alumni of Achievement Award from the college’s National Alumni Council. He and his former colleague, Dr. Esat Toksu, were among the first plastic surgeons in Utica. A diplomate of the American Board of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Shaheen is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has held a number of professional offices, including past president of the Upstate New York Society of Plastic Surgeons and past chief of surgery at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
