Mohawk Valley Writing Project Schedules Workshops


Eleven Seminars for Teachers, Writers This Summer

Utica, NY (05/06/2009) - The Mohawk Valley Writing Project (MVWP) at Utica College released the schedule for its summer workshop sessions. MVWP will offer 11 workshops over the course of the summer featuring a diverse slate of writing approaches and techniques for both teachers and writers.
  • Saturday, June 13, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Blue Mountain Lake: A Writing Retreat. A day for writers to take in the natural beauty of the Adirondacks, reflect and write. Cost is $25 and includes books, supplies and museum admission.
     
  • Monday through Friday, July 6-10, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Solitude: A Writing Workshop. A chance for writers to think and write in a place of solitude, discovering the effects of solitude on their writing practice. Cost is $75 and includes the book.
     
  • Thursday, July 9, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. MVWP Utica Writing Marathon. Writers explore the city of Utica observe, write and share their works. Cost is $25 and includes lunch.
     
  • Monday through Friday, July 13-17, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Because Writing Matters. An introduction for teachers to the three threads of the National Writing Project: writing, teaching and research. Cost is $75 and includes books.
     
  • Monday through Friday, July 13-17, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. exploring Euclid’s Elements.Cost is $50.
     
  • Monday through Friday, July 13-17, 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., English as a Second Language. Cost is $50.
     
  • Monday through Friday, July 20-24, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Closing the Gap, research methodologies to validate, assess and inform classroom writing practices. Cost is $75 and includes books.
     
  • Monday through Friday, July 27-31, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Developing Literacy through the Visual Thinking Strategies. Cost is $75.
     
  • Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 4-6, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Talk to Me I: Surviving Your First Year of Teaching. Cost is $50 and includes books.
     
  • Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 10-12, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Talk to Me II: Avoiding Teacher Burnout. Cost is $50 and includes books.
     
  • Thursday and Friday, Aug. 13-14, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Tuesday through Thursday, Aug. 17-19, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Historical Fiction. Exploring and writing about the human side of history. Cost is $75.
The MVWP is part of the National Writing Project, a professional development network with over 200 local sites serves teachers of all grades and subjects. The mission of the project is to “… improve student achievement by improving the teaching of writing and improving learning in the nation’s schools.”
