Utica, NY (04/20/2009) - Utica College is among 20 partners that will plant a dwarf Crispin apple tree on April 22 in honor of Earth Day and in recognition of the Green Apple Festival. At 3 p.m. in the Boehlert Conference Center, guests are invited to learn about the college’s efforts to go green, followed by the tree planting in front of North and South Halls.
The Central Upstate Regional Alliance and the Green Team, a partnership of environment-friendly central NY organizations, have coordinated the event in hopes that the Crispin apple trees will raise awareness of the alliance while encouraging green efforts throughout the region.
Earth Day, first designated in 1970, raises awareness about the environment and encourages conservation endeavors throughout the world. The National Green Apple Festival is America’s largest Earth Week celebration. Aimed at restoring and giving back to the community, this celebration features concerts and vendors while attracting over 500,000 during its eight national events.
Participating organizations will plant New York’s Crispin apple tree. Crispin apples -- sweet, refreshing and crisp – are of Japanese origin, and are good for eating or baking. The vibrant green, juicy apple is the logo for the Creative Core and was selected as the designated fruit for this regional event.
The Creative Core is a platform for central NY businesses, institutions and organizations to join together to raise awareness. The alliance focuses on the region’s technological innovations, cultural opportunities, and entrepreneurship. “The Creative Core message, reflected in the green apple, highlights our region’s environmental history while promoting a cleaner and more eco-friendly future,” said Elle Stasz, director of marketing.
Creative Core is an initiative of the Central Upstate Regional Alliance, a 42-member partnership to promote and market the region’s assets, and to retain and attract business and talent.
Participating members, who will all plant their trees at the same time, include Mohawk Valley EDGE, the city of Syracuse, LeMoyne College, National Grid of Syracuse, the cities of Auburn and Oswego, and Onondaga Community College.
