Utica, NY (04/20/2009) - The viol first appeared in Europe in the 15th century. It was a popular instrument during the Renaissance and the Baroque periods – a favorite among the nobility. King Henry VIII of England hired an Italian troupe of viol players for his court. This predecessor of the violin spurred great musical compositions during the height of its popularity. Ultimately, the viol fell out of favor as the violin became more popular. Viols were meant to be played in small spaces and the violin could be played in large concert halls.

The 20th century saw a renewed interest in the instrument and viol societies and clubs began forming across the world. On April 22 at 12:30 p.m., the Renaissance Viol Consort will perform in the Utica College Library Concourse as part of the Professor Harry F. and Mary Ruth Jackson Lunch Hour Series.

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information about the series call (315) 792-3028.
