Utica, NY (09/18/2009) - Utica College graduate John McHugh has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate and will begin his term as President Barack Obama’s Secretary of the Army. In a voice vote on Wednesday, Senators confirmed the Watertown native and Republican Congressman from the 23rd district. McHugh graduated from UC in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in political science.

He served in a variety of local government positions in the Watertown area before winning election to the New York State Senate. In 1992 he was elected to the Congress. His district includes Fort Drum, one of the largest Army bases in the country, and he has long advocated on behalf of military service members and their families. He was the ranking member on the House Armed Services Committee’s Subcommittee for Military Personnel and is considered an expert on military personnel matters.

President Obama praised McHugh at the announcement of his appointment to the post and hailed his common-sense, bipartisan approach that has won him friends on both sides of the aisle. His confirmation had been delayed prior to the summer recess.
