Advocate for Rights of Tamil People to Speak at UC

Utica, NY (03/27/2012) - Dr. Paul Newman, associate professor of history at St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore University, India, will present a talk and discussion: “The Human Rights Issues of South Asia, Sri Lanka, India: The Tamils and Their Concerns” at Utica College.The event will take place on Thursday March, 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Willard Conference Room, DePerno Hall and is free and open to the public.
Dr. Newman, who is also visiting classes that day, is an outspoken advocate for the rights of the Tamil people in South Asia. He recently attended and advocated the Tamil cause at the 19th United Nations Human Rights Council session in Geneva. Previously, he participated in the Dublin Tribunal that reviewed violations of human rights and humanitarian law on the part of the Sri Lankan government.
Newman writes extensively on these matters and come directly from Toronto where he consults with the Tamil diaspora.
He holds a doctor of philosophy on Internal Displacement and Human Rights situation in Northern Sri Lanka from Bangalore University. He was one of the four public speakers at the Permanent People’s Tribunal on War Crimes against Sri Lanka.
