UC Library uses trials to evaluate electronic resources we are considering for purchase. Select a topic below to learn more.
What are licensed electronic resources?
Licensed Electronic Resources are:
- Specialized, fee-based resources that require UC Library maintain a license and paid subscription for their use
- Usually priced based on the number of current UC full time students, faculty and staff
- Governed by a license that stipulates only current UC students, faculty and staff will be granted use of the resource
- Restricted to current UC students, faculty and staff
Examples of Licensed Electronic Resources
- Databases
- E-Journals
- E-Newspapers
- E-Books
- Websites with enhanced services for subscribers
Why does UC Library run trials?
Before purchasing a new resource, we test the product using all the paid features and attributes to evaluate:
- Content
- Functionality
- Usability
- Appropriateness for curricular and research missions
What resources are currently being trialed?
There are 2 ways to learn about trials:
Library News
- Currently running trials are announced in the Library News section of the UC Library home page
- A link to the resource is included with the full news story
Find an Online Resource
- Open Find an Online Resource in a browser window
- Perform the title keyword search: trial
- Any current trials will be listed in search results. If no search results are returned, UC Library is not currently offering any trials.
Why your feedback matters
Your feedback is a critical component in our decision to purchase or pass on a resource:
- Both positive and negative comments can be useful
- Feedback from anyone who uses the resource (students, faculty and staff) are valued
Why do some trials require a login for use?
- Some vendors control access to a resource during a trial through username/password authentication
- If a trial requires a login for use the Find an Online Resource and Library News entry will note this and provide instructions for obtaining the login information
How do I learn if a trialed resource is purchased?
UC Library does not buy every resource we trial. To learn if we've purchased a specific resource, search Find an Online Resource by resource title:
- If the resource is listed without (Trial) in the title, UC Library probably purchased the resource
- If the resource is listed with (Trial) still in the title, UC Library is still trialing the resource
- If the resource is not listed, UC Library probably did not purchase the resource
