UTICA, NY - The Utica College women's soccer team defeated St. Lawrence University 2-1 Sunday afternoon in the St. Lawrence Invitational.

With the win the Pioneers finished the weekend 1-1 overall and took home third place in the tournament. The Pioneers lost a heartbreaker 2-1 to Clarkson University in the first round Saturday.

Ashley Kaufman (Northern Lights/Enfield, CT) and Sarah Richards (Stafford/Stafford, CT) were each named to the All-Tournament team. Kaufman, a junior goalkeeper, allowed just two goals in 180:00 minutes of work this weekend.

The Pioneers came out of the gates hot this afternoon as sophomore Ashley Granger (Sutton/Sutton, MA) found the back of the net in the twenty eighth minute. Danielle Smith (VVS/Vernon) assisted on the goal and would later add another assist on a cross to Kristen Vasta (Lenox/Lenox, MA) that slipped through the keeper’s hands.

The Pioneers allowed a late goal but were able to preserve the lead for all ninety minutes. Utica (1-1) will return to action Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. against host Potsdam.
