Utica, NY- The Utica College women's lacrosse team lost to host Stevens Institute of Technology 18-8 in the Empire 8 Conference season-opener for the Pioneers Saturday. Freshman Lily Fleskes netted a team-high three goals for UC in her first collegiate contest.

With the loss, UC is now 0-1 overall and drops to 0-1 in the Empire 8 Conference. The Pioneers return to action on Mar. 5, 2008 in their home opener against Oneonta State at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium at 3:00 p.m.

Stevens came out firing as Leah Wasserman scored a goal less then 30 seconds into the contest beating UC senior goaltender Kelly George. 15 seconds after Stevens jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Pioneers answered back with a goal of their own by senior Casey Pelletier. Freshman Tammy Kohanski was credited with an assist on the goal. Another 14 seconds ticked off the clock before Stevens took a 2-1 lead behind a goal by Katie Lalli at the 29:04 mark.

Stevens netted the game’s next six goals starting at the 26:07 mark as Alyssa Pigott netted her first goal of the game. The run concluded with a goal by Dana Perriello with 17:57 remaining in the first half. 35 seconds later freshman Lily Fleskes broke up the run by netting her first career goal to make the score 8-2, in favor of the Ducks. Credited with an assist was Casey Pelletier.

Fleskes netted her second goal of the game between four goals scored by Stevens over the final 16 minutes of the first half. The score going into halftime was 12-3 in favor of Stevens.

The second half did not fair much better for the Pioneers as the Ducks registered the first two goals of the half to jump the Stevens lead to 11 goals. With 17:33 remaining, Tammy Kohanski scored her first career goal on an assist from Casey Pelletier, her third assist of the game, to make the score 14-4. A minute later, Pelletier scored her second goal of the game and UC found themselves down 14-5 with 16:11 remaining.

Stevens’ Leah Wasserman scored her fourth goal of the day with 15:38 left in the game and gave the Ducks a 10-goal advantage.

Each team netted three goals apiece over the final 15 minutes of the contest and freshman Julianne Schultheiss was credited with netting the final Pioneer goal of the game with 1:12 remaining, making the score 18-8 as the final whistle blew.
