#11 Lisa Torii (03/29/09) - The Utica College women’s water polo team went 2-3 on a five game road trip this weekend in Pennsylvania. The Pioneers were able to snap a 17-game losing streak that spanned over two seasons with the wins this weekend. UC’s 12-goal performance against Penn State Behrend is the most goals the team has scored since a 12-1 victory against Queens College (03/04/06).
Utica College opened the road trip with a 12-4 loss to Grove City College at Gannon University on Friday. Erin Schinasi and Amanda Sulicz led the way offensively for the Pioneers collecting two goals each. On the defensive end, Lisa Torii tallied four steals and Kera Langdon gathered eight saves.
The second half of Friday’s double-header belonged to the Pioneers. They were able to record their first win of the season and snap a 17-game losing streak with their 12-9 victory over Penn State Behrend. Sulicz led the way for UC netting five goals and grabbing three steals. Torii pitched in with three goals, three assists and four steals, while Schinasi contributed two goals and two assists to add to the Pioneers offensive attack. Mary Anne Tomko and Alyssa Cortese added one goal each and Kristyn Galbraith dished out three assists in the win. Kera Langdon was able to anchor down the defense and come up with 10 key saves for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers returned to action on Saturday for the first of a two-game day against Washington & Jefferson at Gannon University. The Pioneers fell 13-2 despite a 10 save performance by Kera Langdon. Sulicz and Kristine Wowelko scored the only two goals for UC.
UC traveled to the Mercyhurst Aquatics Facility for their second game on Saturday against Chatham University. This game belonged to Sulicz. She netted a total of seven goals, one more than the entire Chatham team, and willed the Pioneers to their second victory of the road trip and the season. Schinasi added two goals for Utica College and Sarah Gross and Lisa Torii each pitched in with one goal a piece. Torii also pitched in on the defensive end grabbing a team-high five steals. Kera Langdon again proved to be the anchor for the defense tallying 17 saves and dishing out three assists in the win.
Utica College ended their road trip with a 19-5 loss to host Gannon University on Sunday. Sulicz again led the offense with three goals, while Schinasi and Torii each scored once. In the end, the defense came up a bit short despite Torii, Cortese and Arielle Feinstein grabbing three steals each and Kera Langdon collecting 19 saves and three steals.
Utica College moves to 2-8 on the season with two key wins in the five game stretch. The Pioneers return to the pool Saturday, April 4 with matches against Brown University and Hartwick College. Both contests are located at Harvard University and start times are scheduled for 11:15 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
