#8 Rinae Olsen GAME ONE BOX SCOREGAME TWO BOX SCOREUTICA, NY-- The Utica College softball team dropped two hard fought contests,
3-2 and
4-2, on the road against Empire 8 Conference rival St. John Fisher Sunday.
In game one, with both teams dead locked at 0-0 in the top of the third inning, freshman outfielder
Kim Martin (Holland patent/Prospect, NY) knocked a Fisher pitch over the fence with a runner on base to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. Fisher scored their first run in the bottom half of the same inning, when Samantha Vara crossed home plate on a Fisher ground out. The Pioneers held the 2-1 lead until the sixth inning when Fisher took the lead on runs scored by Katelyn Stubbendeck and Amanda Ball to give the Cardinals a lead and the 3-2 victory in game one.
Martin led the way for the Pioneers in game one going 2-for-3 at the plate and scoring one run, junior infielder
Angel Donahue (Walter Panas/Cortlandt Manor) scored the Pioneers' other run. Freshman pitcher
Kristin Levin (Shenendehowa/Clifton Park, NY), got the loss; she pitched 6.0 innings and struck out three hitters.
In game two, Utica again took the early lead before faultering late in the contest and falling 4-3. The Pioneers struck first when Martin crossed home plate on an
Andrea Curley (South Glens Falls/South Glens Falls) groundout to take a 1-0 lead. With the Pioneers up 2-0 in the fourth inning, Fisher scored their first runs of the game on a single by Kristi Bradley that drove in Sara Dresser to cut the Utica lead to 2-1. Things fell apart for the Pioneers in the seventh and final inning. With Utica leading 2-1, Fisher enjoyed their best offensive inning of the game and scored three runs in the final stanza to take a 4-2 lead and escape with the win.
Martin led the Pioneers going 1-for-4 at the plate and scoring two runs. Junior outfielder
Abby Drew (South Glens Falls/ South Glens Falls) also had a solid showing going 2-for-3, including one double. Levin got the loss after pitching 3.0 innings and finishing with two strikeouts.
The Pioneers are now 8-9 overall and 0-4 in conference play. They return to the diamond Tuesday on the road against Hamilton College, the first pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
