UTICA, NY – The UC softball team got back on track today after losing three of its last four games. The Pioneers defeated host Elmira College 11-2 in game one and 5-2 in game two. Utica is now 12-8 overall and 2-3 in the Empire 8.
The first game remained scoreless through two innings until the Pioneer offense came alive in the 3rd where they would tally four runs. The Pioneers scored another run in the fourth, but then put up another six runs in the 6th inning.
On the day,
Ashley Kaufman (Northern Lights/Enfield, CT) went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double while
Abby Drew (South Glens Falls/South Glens Falls) went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Drew,
Brittany Johnson (Union Endicott/Endicott) and
Rinae Olsen (Schalmont/Schenectady) each had a home run in the game.
Andrea Curley (South Glens Falls/South Glens Falls) allowed only two runs through six innings on the hill for the Pioneers. She also struck out nine batters while only allowing four hits.
In the second game of the double-header, the Pioneers got on Elmira early by putting up three runs in the second inning. Both teams tallied two runs apiece in the fourth inning, but Elmira could not tack on any more runs as the Pioneers held on 5-2, completing the sweep.
Ashley Kaufman went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI and
Anna Solen Westling (Leksand Gymnasium/Leksand, Sweden) went 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI.
Kallie Mathis (Adirondack/West Leyden) tossed a one-hitter for the Pioneers. Mathis went seven innings, giving up only two runs with six strikeouts.
With the wins, the Pioneers record currently stands at 12-9-1 overall and 2-3-1 in the Empire 8 conference. They return to action on Tuesday, April 24th when they host Nazareth College. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
