#16 Dave O'Connell BOX SCORE UTICA, NY (April 4, 2009) - The Utica College men's lacrosse team defeated visiting Gordon College 18-10 in non-conference play Saturday morning. Sophomore
David O'Connell netted a game-high seven points on five assists and two goals.
UC was able to take control of the game early and once in the driver’s seat, the Pioneers never looked back. Gordon. Utica scored three goals in the final 0:13 of first, second and third quarters of play, including goals with one second left on the clock in both the second and third quarters.
Senior attack
Aaron Benoit and junior midfielder
Corey Boulio led the way for the Pioneers in the first quarter scoring two goals each (Benoit at 8:43 and 6:47, Boulio at 3:49 and 0:13). Their four goals helped fuel a UC offensive attack that opened up an 8-3 lead in the initial 15 minutes of play. Benoit scored a team-high four goals in the contest.
The scoring slowed down a bit in the second quarter as UC continued to roll going up 12-5 on Gordon. Benoit (9:22) and Boulio (0:01) each added another goal to their total in the second quarter of action. David O’Connell picked up four of his game-high five assists in the first half of play.
The third quarter looked very similar to the second, with UC outscoring Gordon 4-1 and increasing its lead to 16-6. Senior midfielder
Tom Collins opened up the scoring in the second half with his second goal of the game at 12:28.
Michael Bulger chipped in with a man-up goal with 7:00 remaining in the third and David O’Connell scored his second goal of the game in the final second of the quarter.
The fourth quarter was the only quarter that the Pioneers were outscored by the Fighting Scots. Gordon out-shot Utica 12-7 and outscored the Pioneers 4-2 in a desperate attempt of late-game comeback. Benoit and Bulger each came through with man-up goals in the fourth quarter to squash the comeback and assure the victory for the Pioneers.
Danny Mack led the way for the Fighting Scots scoring a game-high six goals off the bench.
The Pioneers return to action Wednesday, April 8 on the turf at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium against Empire 8 rival Ithaca College. The contest is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
