#18 Vincent Nucci Utica, NY (Jan. 14, 2009) - The Utica College men’s hockey team will be taking advantage of the areas wonderful winter conditions by playing in an outdoor game on Friday, Jan. 16 at 4 p.m. The outdoor rink is located at 14 University Drive in Clinton, NY and it is fully equipped with lights and boards to accommodate the Pioneers as they participate in one of hockey’s most time honored traditions.
“This is a great way to break the normal routine of practicing down at the Aud and our players absolutely love it,” says Head Coach Gary Heenan. “Outdoor games always bring back great memories for most hockey players and I think it will be a great experience for the guys.”
The inter squad scrimmage will feature three on three match ups with goalies on both ends of the 70 ft. x 30 ft. backyard rink. Several youth hockey teams will also be attendance to see the Pioneers square off against each other.
Friday’s weather forecast calls for snow and an overnight low below zero, making for perfect temperatures as the Pioneers hit the outdoor ice.
UC looks to extend its three-game winning streak Thursday when they host Curry College for a non conference contest at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. and live video, audio (WPNR 90.7 FM) and statistics links will be available at www.ucpioneers.com.
The Pioneers enter Thursday’s final non conference matchup of the season with a 9-4-2 overall record. UC is 0-1 all-time against Curry, falling to the Colonels 3-2 in last year’s New York SASH Teddy Bear Toss contest on Dec. 8, 2007.
Freshman Tim Coffman currently leads the Pioneers and is tied for first in the nation among rookies with 25 total points on 13 goals and 12 assists. His average of 1.67 points per game ranks 13th in all of division III men’s hockey.
