BOX SCORE

UTICA, Ny- Barrett Zeinfeld knocked down the game-winning 3-pointer with 1:10 left in a game that featured 14 ties including three in the final 6:20, as RIT defeated host Utica College 64-61 in Empire 8 Conference action Saturday.

RIT snapped a three-game skid and improved to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in conference, while the Pioneers dropped their second consecutive game and are now 4-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The Pioneers were able to tie the game up on nine different occasions in a game that featured 17 lead changes, but as the final buzzer sounded the Pioneers found themselves losing on a last minute shot for the second consecutive night.

UC’s largest lead of the first half was four points, after a Will Abrams 3-pointer was good, to give UC a 29-25 lead with twenty five seconds left in the half. RIT was able to answer right back when Mark Carsen made a lay-up as the buzzer sounded and the scored was set at 29-27 at intermission.

The Tigers took a five point lead on a Zeinfeld lay-up 1:11 into the second half. RIT outscored UC 14-2 over the first 4:32 of the second half to take a commanding 41-31 lead. The Pioneers scored ten unanswered points over the next 2:04 to tie the game back up at 41-41.

UC took the lead four more times throughout the final 13:24, but it seemed as if Zeinfeld or Carson always had an answer. Zeinfeld finished the game with 19 points on 5-of-8 shooting from 3-point range, while Carson scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Tigers.

Junior guard Doug Herring led the way for the Pioneers once again with 15 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals. Junior forward James McClendon tallied ten points and a team-high ten rebounds, while classmate Justin Maxwell came off the bench and scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor.

The Pioneers return to action after the holidays when they take on visiting Elmira College Jan. 4, at 8 p.m., in conference play. The Pioneers defeated Elmira on Dec. 1, 58-56, on a buzzer beater by senior forward Dennis Munch. The game will be streaming live video on-line at www.empire8.tv and live stats will be available at www.ucpioneers.com.
