ELMIRA, NY – Senior guard Dennis Munch knocked down the game-winning jumper with 33 seconds left in regulation to lift the Utica College men’s basketball team past host Elmira College 58-56 Saturday night in Empire 8 Conference action.

The Pioneers improved to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference, while the Soaring Eagles remain winless at 0-5, 0-2. The Pioneers largest lead of the night came at 8:31 of the second half when they took an eight point lead.

Both teams shot exactly 44.2% (19-of-43) from the floor on the evening and the Soaring Eagles earned a 27-24 rebound advantage.

Junior transfer Justin Maxwell led the way, off the bench, for the Pioneers with 16 points on 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Junior forward James McClendon chipped in with 14 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Junior point guard Doug Herring scored 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting. The Pioneers got 29 points off the bench en route to their first conference victory of the season.

UC returns to action Tuesday night when they travel to Cazenovia College to take on the Wildcats at 7 p.m.
