#40 James McClendon BOX SCORE UTICA, NY – Junior forward James McClendon scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Utica College men’s basketball team defeated Paul Smith’s in the semi-finals of the SUNYIT Tip-Off Tournament Friday night.
The Pioneers improved to 1-0 with the season-opening victory, while Paul Smith’s drops to 0-1. Utica will play host SUNYIT Saturday at 3 p.m. in the championships, while Paul Smith’s takes on SUNY Canton in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
UC jumped out to a 15-6 lead behind three lay-ups from McClendon less than five minutes into the contest and the Pioneers never looked back. Paul Smith’s turned the ball over 35 times, which led to 40 Utica points, and an eventual 43 point victory. UC beat Paul Smith’s in their 2006-2007 season-opening game 104-37 at the UC Tip-Off Tournament last year.
Junior all-conference first team guard Doug Herring scored 16 points for UC, while sophomore swingman Pat Goodman also posted sixteen points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor.
Junior Siena College transfer Justin Maxwell went 2-for-4 from three-point land and totaled 13 points in his first game with the Pioneers. Freshman guard James Patterson tallied 11 points and dished out five assist off the bench for UC, while A.J. Trahms went 4-of-5 from the floor and scored ten points in his collegiate debut.
